Irmo, SC — After receiving my Engineering degree from the University of South Carolina in December it was time to get started on our Nationwide car for Daytona. My Dad and I built the car and Johnny Davis lent us an older generation used motor. Jeremy Clements father re-built the motor for us and with the help of many friends we were ready.
With fifty cars vieing for forty three spots, I was blessed to have a locked in position. We did not need to worry about qualifying trim and could concentrate on race set up.
The weather was great in Daytona and pre-race Technical Inspection came off without a hitch. This is something I always worry about because we are by far NASCAR’s smallest team and we do not have a lot of at track capability to re-work the car.
During practice, I knew that I would have to have drafting help to keep up. Our strategy was to lay back and run with a few cars so we would not be in the pack when the ‘big one’ happened and then to go for it at the end. My father is my spotter and he and I actually crew chief the car during the race. We use a Mooresville based crew school as an over the wall pit crew.
The initial strategy was wrong from the beginning. I could not keep up as soon as I was out of the lead pack and quickly got lapped. Fortunately 2 quick cautions gave us the lap back. The lesson was learned! I had to stay in the lead pack the rest of the race.
At times we would pass 6-8 cars in one lap and move up to around 15th and the next lap be back to 24th. To avoid one wreck I was forced down pit road wide open.
The race ended with the ‘big one’. Dad and I had seen it coming and elected to hold back. We avoided the carnage and came home a personal best – 13th. The winner had been 11th and I was 18th on the last re-start, so I guess you could say our conservative stance might have cost us but we did not tear up our race car which could have easily happened if we had forced the issue. Unlike the well funded teams we would be out of business if we lost the car.
I am very proud of our guys and all the people who helped us and look forward to competing again.
See you at the races!
